The World(MSCI All Country World Index weighting)Entire U.S. stock market: 63%Japan, UK, Canada, France, Hong Kong/China combined: 17.5%Magnificent 7: 17%Source: Dimensional FundsThat seems crazy, no? For example, in the mid-1960s the concentration of the top 10 was over 40% of the S&P 500. Investors who own the S&P 500 don't have to pick those winners; they just go along for the ride. Second, U.S. stocks are global market leaders, and when a small group becomes market leaders it almost always means the U.S. stock market outperforms the world. The U.S. stock market, which was roughly 40% of the global market capitalization a short while ago, is now roughly 50% of global market capitalization.

Two funds investing in defensive stocks are the only exchange-traded funds in the world that had a positive return every year over the past decade, CNBC Pro research has found. The two funds stood out among 8,300 equity ETFs worldwide screened by CNBC Pro using FactSet data. Over that period, the ETF more than doubled investors' money, with a cumulative total price gain of 118%. While the MSCI Healthcare index, valued in euros, dipped slightly into negative territory in 2016, 2020 and 2022, the Amundi ETF's total returns have remained positive because of the weakness in the pound sterling. However, Tabet also pointed out that the health-care sector, especially European pharma, tends to underperform in election years.

As the end of the year approaches, investors are likely to be reviewing their portfolios and considering which stocks to sell to harvest tax losses. Tax-loss harvesting is a strategy to offset capital gains tax from stocks that have run up in share price with losses from non-performing stocks. To aid investors, Scotiabank identified several stocks on Canada's TSX Composite index that are down significantly this year but are still rated as "Sector Outperform" by its analysts. They argue that geopolitical tensions between the West and China risk the reliable supply of rare earth minerals. Aclara's Barua said that Western supply of rare earth elements will not develop if it depends on Chinese prices. "The price of any metal (rare earth or otherwise) that is coming from China or from western countries has the same pricing, so why should rare earth pricing be different?" The discussion on pricing has come up often in the Rare Earth Industry Association, said Veluri, who is also the president of the global organization with partners representing the whole rare earth value chain. "But for things like cobalt, copper, or rare earth metals there is a good strategic play to find with a mining partner."
